Determination, story of a little girl who over came an angry man by her
determination to get the 50 cents.
Back in the 60's million dollar life insurance sales man Clarence Darby graduated from
the university of hard knocks. After learning from his experience in the gold mining
business quitting 3 feet from the mother load he went on to be one of the most successful
life insurance salesman. He became the success he did because he said to himself I stopped
3 feet from the gold back then but now I will not stop when a potential customer says no.
He tells about one of the keys to success that come clearer in this story.
One afternoon he was helping his uncle grind wheat in an old fashion mill. Quietly the
door opened and a small child the daughter of one of the tenants snuck in and stood near
the door. The uncle looked up and saw the child and barked at her roughly saying
"what do you want", weakly the child replied, my mammy says to send her 50
cents! Not doin', you run on home he barked. Yes sir the little girl replied but not
moving. The uncle went ahead with his work busily engaged that he did not notice the girl
did not leave. When he looked up and still saw her standing there, he yelled at her
"I told you to go home, now go or I will take a switch to ya", the little girl
said "yes sir" but did not budge.
The uncle dropped a sack of grain he was about to pour into the mill hop, picked up a
barrel stave and started toward the girl with an expression on his face that meant
trouble. Darby held his breath certain he was about to witness an assault, he new his
uncle had a fierce temper. When the uncle reached the spot where the child was standing
she quickly stepped forward one step looked up into his eyes and screamed with all she had
"My mammy got to have that fifty cents"
The uncle stopped looked at her for a minute then slowly laid the barrel stave on the
floor, reached down into his pocket and gave the little girl the 50 cents. The child took
the money and slowly backed toward the door never taking her eye off the man who she had
just conquered. The uncle then sat down on a box starring out the window pondering at what
just happened.
Taking one more step toward success just when you feel that you have been beat, that
little girl is probably giving seminars today.
