From the movie Minority Report.
Tom Cruise stars as John Anderton, the ferociously focused head of Washington, D.C.’s Department of
Precrime.
Anderton and his bureau director, Lamar Burgess (Max von
Sydow), are on the verge of proving that the precrime system should be rolled out nationwide (there
hasn’t been a murder in Washington in six years). They are in deep
discussion about Precrime's future as Cruise expresses his passion and
belief in the system when his director Burgess says to him "you
don't choose your belief, your belief chooses you".
From Walt Disney’s movie A Princess's
Diary.
The modern day Cinderella story. Staring Julie Andrews as the Queen of
Genobia and Anne Hathaway as Emilia Thopoulus (sounds like the founder of
that pizza company Panagopulous) that geeky girl, clumsy, feet kind of
pigeon toed, never really couldn't get things right. She never really
wanted to aspire to be much when she learns that her father was the Prince
of Genobia, he had recently died and she was to take over the throne and
leadership of that country. The queen comes to teach her how to be
graceful, elegant, the roles and duties of a princess. Obviously she makes
a mess of everything she touches and wants to give up. She is about to
quit and run away from this dream when she come across a letter from her
father. As he spoke in his authoritative voice,
"It is a custom in my family to pass on a piece of wisdom when
one reaches this age, I pass it on to you as my father passed it on to me.
"Emilia - Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment
that something else is more important than fear. The brave may not live
for ever but the cautious do not live at all" from now on you will be
traveling the road between who you think you are and who you can be"
The key is to allow yourself to make the journey"
From the movie Spider Man the uncle
of Spider Man (Tobey Maguire) was noticing that this kid was going through
some changes, not knowing he was changing into Spider Man he tried to
advise him. The uncle said that he believed he would do great things and
that he wanted him to remember that when he rose to great power that "with
power comes great responsibility".
From the movie Serendipity the best
man of Jonathan (John Cusack) found himself inspired by Johns passion for
pursuing this fantasy of finding this sole mate he briefly met years ago
Sara (Kate Beckinsale). On the plane to find her hours before he was to be
married to another women the best man told Cuzac that he had broken up
with his girl. He expressed the relationship had died. He recalled the
words of a philosopher who said "If you want to improve, be
content to be thought foolish and stupid". These words remind
me of all the successful people who were once considered crazy for their
pursuits, that all great people were first misunderstood. Pursue your
dreams and do not be afraid of what common people think.
From the movie Finding Forrester.
William Forrester (Sean Connery) a Pulitzer prize winner who never gave
the public a second book becomes a brilliant 16 year old basketball
players mentor. Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown) the young New York kid who’s
passion is writing came to a frustrating point struggling to get the words
on paper. Connery said to him "write the first copy with your
heart and write the second copy with your head".
From Star Wars
“No, try not! Do or not do, there is no try”
~ Yoda ~
From the The Matrix. "There's
a difference between knowing the path and walking the path."
Morpheus
Contributed by Jeannie Cu. Jeannie adds her insight and says "even
if we know how to do a certain task or knowledgeable with a certain skill
if we don't apply it, it is useless. For example, we know the value of having good time management
but if we fail to apply the time management skills that we learn, it
does not improve our life. It is like knowing that there is a bag of money
at the end of the road and if we don't walk down the road, we won't be
able to get the bag of money."
Thank you Jeannie for that insight and contribution. I agree with her
100%. I believe that most of us have the skills, the knowledge and the
desire but we lack the discipline or the goals to drive us down the path.
Knowledge not applied is wasted. Learn, apply and reap the rewards.
